Chapter 5

Jeremy Haines was a professor of anthropology at the New York University. He had been teaching for the last thirty years and had been Jena’s professor when she was a graduate student studying Egyptology. He had always supported and encouraged her studies. He also happened to be one of the most knowledgeable and distinguished professors in the field. If her Pharaoh was real and anyone knew of him, it would be Professor Haines.

Jena approached his office and paused outside his door. She took a moment to straighten herself out, making sure she seemed both professional and composed. He appreciated well put together people and she had always strived to meet that criteria.

She knocked twice quickly and waited. After a moment, Professor Haines answered the door.

“Professor,” Jena greeted with a smile, offering her hand. “Thank you for meeting me on such short notice.”

“Of course, of course,” he answered, shaking her hand heartily. “I always have time for one of my favorite students.”

Jena beamed at the compliment and stepped into his office when he backed up and motioned her inside. He took a seat behind his desk and she sat opposite him on the other side.

“Now,” he began, leaning forward and folding his hands together. “You sounded urgent in your phone call. What is this all about?”

Jena hesitated. She wasn’t exactly sure how to approach this subject without explaining everything that had been going on. And that definitely wasn’t an option. She had no desires to appear crazy to a man she highly respected. So, clearing her throat, Jena said, “It’s a bit of a project. I’m working on a new exhibit for the museum this week and I’ve come across a couple of interesting pieces, but I think they were sent by mistake. My exhibit is mostly focusing on the early Middle Kingdom, and I think this piece belongs to the Old Kingdom instead.”

Haines was nodding along, listening carefully. “I see.”

Jena continued, trying to give him enough to help, but not so much as to ask more questions. “I think the piece belongs to a Pharaoh by the name of Anenkhet, but I’m not sure if he’s Middle or Old Kingdom. Does the name ring any bells?”

Haines considered her question and the information provided for a moment. “Anenkhet,” he repeated to himself. Something occurred to him it seemed, because he rose from his seat and went to a large reference book sitting on one of his bookshelves. He pulled it down and opened it up on the desk, leafing through it until he found what he was looking for. “Ah, here we are,” he said, pointing at a picture of a tablet found in Egypt. “Anenkhet, Pharaoh of the Old Kingdom. He was considered the Creator God for his plentiful reign, one attributed to a period of agricultural richness and general wealth for his people. To commemorate this, the pharaoh had a scarab beetle tattooed on his chest.”

Jena’s breath caught in her throat as Professor Haines said this. The winged scarab beetle tattoo was vivid in her mind—as was the pharaoh’s sculpted chest.
